adaptation - a modification of a species, occurring as a result of natural selection. Adaptations enhance a species' ability to survive.
In this issue's "Where in the World" story, Julie Scardina treks to Africa to experience lions and other large predators in their natural environment. African lions are well equipped with several physical and behavioral adaptations that help them survive and prevail. Here are a few examples:
Physical adaptation - The upper surface of a lion's tongue is covered with backward-curved horny papillae, useful for both holding onto meat and removing parasites during grooming.
Behavioral adaptation - To conserve energy, lions remain inactive up to 21 hours a day. In the darkest, coolest hours of early morning, the lionesses hunt as a team to catch a communal meal.
